Participation in the Conference "Pearls: Art & Science"

By Cyrielle MATHIEUX
December 2023 / December 2023 - Paris, France

Recently, I had the opportunity to attend a captivating conference at L’École des Arts Joailliers, led by Inezita Gay-Eckel, jewelry historian, and Lætitia Gilles-Guéry, gemologist. As someone passionate about jewelry and gemstones, this experience was particularly enriching.

The conference was structured in three parts. The first, “What is a Pearl?”, explored the definition and formation process of pearls. I learned how pearls naturally form within mollusks and the essential distinction between natural pearls and cultured pearls. This deeper understanding allowed me to better appreciate the value and rarity of each type of pearl.

In the second part, “The Power of a Gem,” the speakers discussed the emotional and symbolic impact of pearls throughout history. Their ability to inspire imagination and transcend cultures is truly fascinating. I was particularly touched by the historical and artistic stories surrounding these gems, highlighting their place in works of art and their influence on fashion.

The final part, “From Paris to the World,” explored the journey of pearls within the world of contemporary jewelry. Paris, as a global fashion capital, has played a central role in the evolution of pearl jewelry, influencing trends worldwide. This section reinforced my understanding of Paris’s importance in the development of jewelry, thanks to its rich heritage and exceptional craftsmanship.

This conference not only expanded my knowledge of pearls but also strengthened my passion for jewelry. With their timeless beauty and fascinating history, pearls continue to be an endless source of inspiration, and I look forward to exploring this captivating world even further.
