I completed the free introductory course of the Colored Stone Essentials program offered by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), specifically Module CSE 1: The Nature of Gemstones. This first module establishes the essential foundations for understanding what a gemstone is and how it is studied by gemologists.
The course begins by defining what a gemstone is and introduces the three characteristics common to all gems: their chemical composition, crystal structure, and physical properties. It also covers the fundamental concepts of composition and structure, explaining why each gemstone possesses unique characteristics.
A significant part of the module focuses on value factors, such as color, clarity, cut, and weight, as well as durability factors, which determine a gemstone’s resistance over time and its suitability for use in jewelry.
The module also introduces how gemologists classify gemstones, distinguishing between groups, species, and varieties. This classification provides a rigorous and scientific framework for identifying and organizing gemstones.
This introductory course allowed me to acquire a basic gemological vocabulary and an initial understanding of the gemological approach, laying the necessary foundations to further explore colored gemstones and high jewelry.
